বই পড়াটা আমার সবসময়ই খুব পছন্দের। আমার মনে হয়না মানুষ আর বইপত্র একটা আলাদা রকম কিছু। দুজনারই একটা গল্প বলার থাকে, অভিজ্ঞতা ভাগ করার থাকে, তাইনা?
তবে কেউ যদি আমাকে একটা প্রিয় বইএর নাম বলতে বলে সেটা খুব একটা সহজ ব্যাপার হবে না, তার জন্য প্রথমত অনেক বই পড়তে হবে এবং বুদ্ধি খাটিয়ে সেগুলোর মধ্যে থেকে বেছে নিতে হবে প্রিয় একটি! আমি খুব বেশী বই পড়িনি, তবুও তার মধ্যে রোয়াল্ড ডাল্ এর 'মাটিল্ডা' আমার সবচেয়ে প্রিয়। বইটির ইলাস্ট্রেশন করেছেন কুইন্টিন ব্লেক। আমার ছ বছর বয়সে পড়েছিলাম 'মাটিল্ডা'। বইটি গত সাত বছর ধরে আমার সঙ্গী এবং এখনও এটি পড়লে মুগ্ধ হতে হয়।
'মাটিল্ডা' একটি চার বছর তিন মাস বয়সী মেয়ে যাকে তার বাবা মা মোটেও কদর করতো না, উল্টে বাজে ব্যাবহার করতো এবং নানাভাবে ছোট করে দেখতো! এদিকে 'মাটিল্ডা' কিন্তু অসম্ভব বুদ্ধিমতী, তার বয়সী অন্যান্য বাচ্চাদের তুলনায় সে অনেক কিছু করতে পারতো। যেমন, সে নিজে নিজেই পড়তে শিখেছিল, কেননা বেচারীর বাবা মা এসব ব্যাপারে মাথাই ঘামাতো না! বাবা মা না থাকলে মাটিল্ডা চুপিচুপি লাইব্রেরী গিয়ে প্রচুর বই পড়তো। পরে অবশ্য তাকে স্কুলে ভর্তি করা হয়েছিল। কিন্তু সেখানে আবার মাটিল্ডাকে লড়তে হয়েছিল ভয়ংকর বদমেজাজী হেডমিস্ট্রেস মিসেস ট্রাঞ্চবুলের সাথে।
ছ বছর বয়সী আমি যখন 'মাটিল্ডা' পড়েছিলাম তখন ছোট্ট মাটিল্ডার জন্য আমার খুব খারাপ লাগতো! কি কঠিন সময়ের মধ্য দিয়ে ওকে যেতে হয়েছিল! আমার ওকে সত্যিকারের মানুষ বলে মনে হতো, ওর হাসি কান্না দুষ্টুমি সব আসল বলে মনে হতো। আমি আশ্চর্য হয়ে যেতাম ওর সাহস, তীক্ষ্ণ বুদ্ধি, প্রিয়জনের প্রতি ভালবাসা দেখে! মোটের ওপর 'মাটিল্ডা' হলো একটি সাহসী মেয়ের গল্প যে তার স্কুলের টিচারের সাহায্য নিয়ে একটি অসম্ভব ঘটনা সম্ভব করেছিল।
নিউ ইয়র্ক টাইমস বুক রিভিউতে বলা হয়েছিল, "মাটিল্ডা নিশ্চিত ভাবে ছোটদের হৃদয় ছোঁবে", এবং কথাটা একদম সত্যি। 'মাটিল্ডা' এমনভাবে আমার মনে গেঁথে গিয়েছিল যে আমিও ভীষণ ভাবে মাটিল্ডার মতো পড়ুয়া হতে চেয়েছিলাম। মাটিল্ডা যেসব বই পড়েছিল, 'নিকোলাস নিকলবি', 'অলিভার টুইস্ট', 'জেন আয়্যার', 'প্রাইড অ্যান্ড প্রেজুডিস', 'দ্য ইনভিজিবল ম্যান', 'অ্যানিম্যাল ফার্ম' এবং আরো সমস্ত বই আমি পাগলের মতো পেতে চেয়েছিলাম। এবং এর সাথে কুইন্টিন ব্লেক এর যথার্থ ইলাস্ট্রেশন। উনি মাত্র দুটো ডট দিয়ে কি দারুন বুদ্ধিদীপ্ত চোখ এঁকেছিলেন ভাবাই যায়না!
মনে আছে আমি আমার কাজিন কে গল্পটা পড়ানোর চেষ্টা করেছিলাম। ও আমার মতো বই পাগলা নয় তবু আমার মনে হয়েছিল মাটিল্ডার মতো মেয়ের গল্প পড়লে ও-ও আমার মতো অনুপ্রেরণা পাবে। মাটিল্ডা আমাদের শেখায় যে এই পৃথিবীতে চলার পথে আমাদের সামনে অনেক বাধা-বিপত্তি আসবে, অনেকে ব্যাঙ্গ বিদ্রুপ করবে, সমালোচনা করবে, কেউ হয়তো ঘৃণাও করবে। আমাদের কাজ হবে এ সমস্ত বিরূপতার বিরুদ্ধে রুখে দাঁড়ানো এবং নিজের অধিকার বুঝে নেওয়া। এজন্যই মাটিল্ডা আমার এত প্রিয়। বইটির প্রকাশক পাফিন বুকস। প্রথম প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল গ্রেট ব্রিটেনে, ১৯৮৮সালে।

I have always liked to read books. I don't think books are any different than real human beings. All of them have a story to tell, an experience to share, right?
It is very hard to classify a single book as your favourite. That can only be possible if you have read loads of books, and then have the brains to announce a chosen book as your favourite. Even though I haven't read a lot of books, I can name one as my favourite and that book is 'Matilda' by Roald Dahl, illustrated by Quentin Blake. I read the book when I was six years old. The book has been my companion for seven years straight and it still hasn't failed to enchant.
'Matilda', a four years and three months old girl, had her potentials unrealized by her parents. They mistreated her, and underestimated her self-worth. Matilda was an extraordinarily witty child, able to do many things which other children of her age were unable to accomplish. She was self taught as her parents were least bothered about her studies. She stole away to the library in the absence of her parents and used to read a lot of books there. Later she was admitted to school.There again her growing battle against her abusive headmistress, Mrs. Trunchbull, also, was an extremely brave act.
Being only six years old when I first read Matilda, I couldn't help feeling sorry for this brave four years old girl who led such a terrible life. I imagined her as a real person and her emotions were as real as mine. I marveled at her courage, intelligence and compassion for her loved ones.It is a story about a brave girl, who with a little bit of help and support from her teacher accomplished a miracle.
The New York Times Book Review said that "....Matilda will surely go straight to children's hearts". And they were right, she darted inside my head and heart and I simply had this mad urge to be a 'reader' like her. I remember having an unquenchable thirst to read all the books which my four years old fictional friend had read. 'Nicolas Nickleby', 'Oliver Twist', 'Jane Eyre', 'Pride and Prejudice', 'The invisible man', 'Animal Farm' and so on. And I must mention the free hand illustration by Quentin Blake. I just wonder how Matilda's eyes looked extremely intelligent in one picture, whereas the fun fact is that the eyes were represented only by two dots!
I remember trying to make my cousin read the book. She isn't a fanatic like me, but I thought that sharing the story of this inspirational young girl would be quite prophetic of me. Matilda gives us a message that a few things in this world will be there to stand as a barrier in our way, some may taunt us, some may criticise us, and some may mindlessly hate us. Our duty is to stand up and fight for our rights. I simply adore her for this reason. The book is published by Puffin Books. It was first published in 1988 in Great Britain.
